Plant Description

Latin Name: Hippophae rhamnoides
English Name: Sea buckthorn
French Name: Argousier
Family: Elaeagnaceae
Origin: Quebec, Canada

History and Origin

Sea Buckthorn is a small thorny shrub native to Europe and Asia. It is now cultivated in North America. The flowers are very small and greenish. They appear in April, before leaves. The fruits are small orangey bays with an ovoid form.

Sea Buckthorn is used since ancient times for its health benefits. Its Latin botanical name Hippophae shows well its ancient use and qualities: hippos means « horse » and phaos means « light ». At that time, sea buckthorn branches were given to horses to make them gain weight and give them a shiny coat.

Hints

It is important to distinguish between sea buckthorn oil from the fruit and from the seeds. The oil extracted from the fruit has a large amount of betacarotene and palmitoleic acid which protect from free radicals. The oil extracted from the seeds differs slightly. Its color is clearer because it has a lower content of carotenoid. On the other hand, it has a larger amount of unsaturated fatty acids essential for enhancing the immune system and supporting cardiovascular, brain and liver health.

Used Part: Seeds

Extraction: Cold-pressed

Average Composition: Linoleic acid (35,72 %), oleic acid (49,08 %), carotenoids (provitamin A), vitamin E.

Oil Characteristics: Orangey oil with a delicate fruity odor.

Properties: Antioxidant, anti-ageing, moisturizing, regenerating, calming, soothing.
