History and Origin

True Lavender is a subshrub growing on the dry and sunny hillsides of southern France and other countries around the Mediterranean Sea. It comes with a long-standing reputation as a popular remedy. Known since Roman Antiquity as a perfume and aromatic, Lavender was named from Latin term lavare (meaning “to wash”). Not only using it to perfume linen, Romans also used it in private and public baths. But lavender was also known as a popular remedy against digestive disorders as well as a cosmetic care and insect repellant.

This essential oil is extracted from a small tree that comes from Indo-Malaysian tropical areas. Subsequently, the tree was naturalized by the European explorers in most of the tropical islands of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean. The Latin name of ylang-ylang « Cananga » is simply derived from the original name of the plant in Malay (Kananga ou Kénanga).

The distillation of ylang is special. The first tests were recorded in 1860 by a sailor named Albert Schwenger. The delicate fragrance began to be used in the perfumery field and a unique extraction method was developed. The essential oil is collected in several steps during the distillation process, that is why we can find the names totum, complete (12 to 24 hours of distillation continuously), extra (first hour of distillation), no 2 and no 3.

 Around late 17th century, Anne Marie Orsini, Dutchess of Bracciano and Princess of Nerola, popularized the essence of bitter orange as a fragrance by using it to perfume her gloves and as bathing water. Since then, “neroli” is used to designate orange blossom. Many young brides would use orange blossom to ornament their hair as a symbol of purity and fertility. The flower represented the spirit of the Virgin Mary. The white flower symbolizes virginity and the fruit, maternity.

 Sage is cultivated since Antiquity. It used to be called “clear eye” (origin of its name: “clary” sage). People believed it was able to reinforce eye vision. Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is one of the two sage varieties used in perfumery; the other one being Salvia officinalis. Sclareol, typical component of this plant, is a very powerful molecule that is highly sought after for its capacity to produce derivatives with an amber aroma. Large scale cultures of Clary sage are exploited in the United-States, China and Ukraine and used to produce a concrete from which sclareol is chemically extracted. Provence also produces Clary sage.
